
Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) was established in 1982 with its headquarters at Shalimar, Srinagar, initially serving the entire J&K, it now caters to the Kashmir region, focusing on education, research, and extension in agriculture and allied sciences.Over the years, the university has evolved into a leading multi-campus institution, operating through seven major campuses, 14 KrishiVigyanKendras (KVKs), and 14 research stations and sub-stations spread across diverse agro-climatic zones of Kashmir. This well-distributed infrastructure enables effective field research, technology dissemination, and farmer-centric outreach.
The university comprises several specialized faculties, including the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Horticulture, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Fisheries, the College of Temperate Sericulture, and the College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology. These faculties offer a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in both conventional and emerging disciplines such as Biotechnology, Microbiology, Food Technology, Soil & Water Engineering, Organic Agriculture, and applications of Artificial Intelligence in agriculture.
SKUAST-K has made significant progress in academic reforms and innovation. It was the first agricultural university in India to adopt the updated ICAR 6th Deans Committee curriculum, ensuring skill-based and industry-aligned education. The university has gained national prominence for its rapid growth in research and innovation, securing over 100 patents and fostering a strong startup ecosystem through its innovation and incubation platforms.
In the NIRF 2025 Rankings, SKUAST-K achieved remarkable success, securing 7th position nationally in the Agriculture & Allied Sectors category and emerging among the top three State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) in the country.It also ranked 36th among State Public Universities, 75th among all Universities, and 94 overall in India, reflecting its national excellence, reaffirming its position as a premier institution driving agricultural innovation and rural transformation in Jammu & Kashmir. With its strong focus on excellence, innovation, and farmer welfare, SKUAST-K continues to play a pivotal role in transforming temperate Himalayan agriculture.
